The screen fades to black after the last transmission, before illuminating with the image of John Castle standing in what appears to be a gym. John is dressed in a pair of black shorts, trainers and a sleeveless t-shirt with a sports watch on his left wrist. Castles voice can be heard coming through the speakers, playing over the image presented to the audience with the sound of Sway by Coal Chamber playing along in the background.
The camera pans around Castle, showing off his strong and powerful back and well developed deltoid muscles. There are flashes coming into the shot from the distance probably from some sort of storm, yet no thunder can be heard.
Castle then speaks; “To be the best, that it why I am in this business. I am here to be the best that I possible can be, an if I have to train like a made man all year round to beat my opponent then the deal is as good as done.”
The scene changes to an outdoor field on a sunny day, there is a rope ladder on the field suspended by 4 stakes at each end holding it roughly around a foot or so off the ground. Towards the top of the ladder is Castle who is jumping up and down on his toes getting the blood flowing and preparing his muscles.
“Too many big guys in wrestling focus too much on power and strength, don’t get me wrong I am a big guy! But to me it is better to concentrate to speed, power and agility all combined into one apex. So to enhance my speed I will run the ropes, so that soon as my foot my touches the ground its quickly brought back up, the same while jumping the hurdles, again as soon as my feet touch the grass they are brought right back up to jump over the next hurdle.”
As Castle speaks, the footage of Castle performing the movements he describes is projected on the screen, showing just how fast he can run the ropes and jump the hurdles. This is then over lapped with stock footage of the some of the things he has done to date in wrestling, namely his explosive jump from the concrete floor right up the apron of the ring.
“A lot of guys and girls looking to get in shape, and this includes wrestlers as well, will stay in a gym and will use a treadmill and think that’s good enough. For me I prefer to get outside to do my cardio its always challenging with the changes in the terrain. It doesn’t matter to me if it is running in the mountains with several inches of snow or running up the steps at the local football stadium under the unforgiving sun.”
As before while Castle speaks the screen shows him in one instance covered in thermals, running through blizzard like conditions his warm breath clearly visible in the crisp cool air, then the scene changes as Castle is running up the long, steep steps of a public football stadium, the sun glaring down on his bare back as the beads of sweat run down is vascular skin.
“But when I go inside to use the gym facilities I start off with doing some work on the heavy bag. An to me that is just working on the hand eye co-ordination as well as the chest area. One of the things that I like to imagine is that the bag is my opponent, suspended from a beam on the ceiling held up by shackles. When in this mind frame I just to really hammer on the back imagining that it is the ribs of who ever is I am facing in that ring”
The montage continues to change now showing Castle in a small run down gym, as he repeated pound on the heavy bag the results of each impact clearly visible as the bag sways back and forth. Again over lapped with video footage of Castles earlier matches as he pounds on the injured body parts of his opponents.
“An when I get into the weights room, I prefer to hit the big compound movements, I start each session with deep squats with my legs going past parallel. Next comes the dead lifts to help work my lower back and hamstrings which are muscles that often to not get used which can cause imbalances and increase your risk of injuries.”
As the footage changes yet again, Get heavy by Lordi begins to play in the background as Castle moves from one area of the gym to the next, it shows Castle with huge amount of weight across his back. The bar which the weight has been rested upon has begun to bend slightly as Castle lowers the weight and the top half of his body downwards towards the ground, going as low as possible. He holds the position for a moment before driving up through his heels and returning to his upright vertical base, as he continue to perform a few reps with ease. Next scene shows Castle with the bar in hand, is body in the squat position as he lifts the heavy bar of the ground. Again the bar has begun to bend in the middle due to the colossal weight on either end.
"After we have done that, next up is the bench press, which too many guys obsesses over but I just do it to be a really meat head. I start off on a flat bench and then move up to an incline with dumb bells. If I am feeling creative I will throw some chains onto the end of the bar to help over load the pectorals and triceps. At the end of each session I will follow up with some push ups, which I do on 3 chairs, this way removes the floor and as a limiting factor allowing me to go much lower and achieve a full range of motion”
“Next up are the pull ups, which helps to keep your body balanced and it shows that you are strong enough to control your own body weight, I will rotate the basic pull ups with towel pulls up to help improve my grip strength so at that once you get a hold of some one you are not letting go.”
The image shows Castle in the gym going from one set of pull ups to the next, before changing to footage of Castle using his predator bomb in his opponents as his vice like grip clenches around their throats, depriving them of air, as he raises them up and slams them down in to mat or concrete depending on the type of match.
“At the end of each session, I get my protein shake down me within 30 minutes of my workout because a huge part of the battle is good nutrition because I have to call upon energy through out the day since as a wrestler we are doing physical action. After the protein shake I will often take an ice bath an this comes as a result of my background playing football where the players will take an ice bath to help recuperate their muscles for the next training session and it is no different with myself.”
The footage shows Castle filling a large metallic tub up with buckets of ice before lowering himself down into is, his breathing at first heavy as his body becomes accustom to the temperature. The screen then fades to black as the words “Power”, “Strength” and “Speed” All appear in quick succession in bold white letters against the black background before the screen finally fades away.
